The Sugar Bush

The Sugar Bush

The Sugar Bush, Maple Syrup and pancakes are part of our February, March and April happenings here in Ontario. It's family outing time when the maple sap is running and the sugar bush operators open their doors to those of us who love the taste of fresh maple syrup.

Some sugar bush operations have walking trails and if there is enough snow there are sleigh rides. The sleighs are drawn by Clydesdale horses. Those horse are quite large, well muscled and strong and are a favorite of adults and children alike. People love to get their pictures taken with the Clydesdales.

I have no idea why they call it a sugar bush because the maple trees are large tall trees and not like the bushes that I'm familiar with. According to wikipedia the sugar bush is a forest stand that is exploited for maple syrup. I grew up in Newfoundland Labrador and we called this type of growth, the woods.

A few days ago we went to Temple's Sugar Bush in Ferguson Falls for breakfast, brunch or lunch. My wife and I had eaten breakfast so it was lunch and our friends hadn't eaten breakfast so for them it was brunch. The pancake, that I had were delicious with the fresh pale syrup. My wife ordered french toast on a cinnamon swirl bread. There were two, one inch slices of bread. I'll say one thing for Temples, they do not skimp on pancake syrup.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Temple's Sugar Bush and may go back again before the season ends.

Wild Turkeys

What has The Sugar Bush got to do with wild turkeys? Well, there are a number of wild turkeys in the area and on our way home, there was a rafter or a gang getting ready to cross the road. We slowed down but one flew and clipped the aerial and hit the cab of the truck. It was quite the smack. We thought for sure that it was dead so we stopped, thinking we might have roadkill.

There was no sign of an injured or dead turkey. We searched along the roadside and a meadow. Apparently, the turkey was not injured and was last seen running into the woods with the gang.

We had just been talking about some donkeys that we had seen and my friend, who was driving, has a saying when someone he knows says or does something out of character. His saying is "you donkey!" His wife says that they have a friend and his saying is "you turkey!". Then wham, we hit a turkey. You Turkey!
