The dory was one of the main sources of transportation where we grew up. There were few cars, however;
every family had a dory. There was a long stretch of water near our house that ran in a narrow outlet to the ocean. Even as
children we went out rowing in the dories. The dory was a safe and sturdy boat. I remember my father's stories about fishing
on the Grand Banks and being alone out there in the dory. There are many unwritten stories of the role this boat played in
people's lives. There is a nostalgia about this wooden boat. Dories were painted mostly yellow, however; the trim was
usually a different color. There were hundreds of those boats but even as children we knew which dory belonged to different
families.

The hiding place
During the fall, we would
haul up the dories and turn them over for the winter. Our dory was turned over on a place we called the sawdust heap. This
was at the bottom of our garden and near the brook and the main road. When the tide came in, we could haul the dory into the
brook, row under the bridge and out into the tickle. The rolled over dory became a great hiding place. We would crawl under
the over-turned dory and play hide and seek.
I recall one day I hid there from my mom and my grandfather.
My father was working away from home and my grandfather promised,a seven year old boy, that he would take me in the country
for a ride on his horse and slide. I was waiting, down by the fence, and heard the bells from my grandfather's horse.
I was so excited. Grandfather was coming up the main road, but he went on by. He didn't stop! I cried out to him but he
didn't hear me. Then I did what many seven year olds would do..I started to cry and crawled under the dory to hide. Mom
didn't know that Grandfather had forgotten about me. He realized, on his way back that he had forgotten me and stopped
to say that he was sorry. They found me under the dory but I would not come out. Thety tried to bribe me with money and bars
but I stayed under the dory. Then Grandfather crawled in and put his arms around me and said that he was sorry and that he
would take me to his and nan's house, for dinner, and I could stay all night. Everything was all right again for a seven
year old boy.
