Root Cellar

Cellars or root cellars were common place when I was a child. We had no electricity. There were no refrigerators or freezers. All that we had was the cellar.
There we stored our vegetables, meat and eggs. The meat was usually mutton or moose. Also we had hens or chickens. There was plenty of hens eggs and we also ate ducks eggs.
The cellar was where we also kept salt cod, dried caplin, salt meat and pork.

Our cellar was similar to the one in the following picture.
My father dug into the hill behind our house and built a shed over the excavation.
It was the cellar.
