The term Newfie or Newfies has been and is still controversial. The major controversy
may be the newfie jokes. Where did the term newfie originate from? What is the definition? Newfie, as defined in The Collins Dictionary is a native or inhabitant of newfoundland. Some other references define newfie as a newfoundlander and someone from newfoundland.
Has the term, continued to be condescending or is it now a term of endearment? When
referring to Newfoundlanders, as Newfies ,does it mean hard working newfoundlanders? How do you
feel about being called a newfie? Do we, as newfoundlanders, make ourselves the butt of jokes?
May I say, that I'm a Newfoundlander and have mixed views on the term newfie. I have
been called a newfie, by non-newfoundlanders and it was always accepted with pride. For a number
of years, I worked as a travel consultant and had occasion to travel throughout many countries of the world. I do not recall
ever being degraded for, being a newfoundlander and yes, I was referred to as being a newfie. Personally,
I never tell newfie jokes, however; people have tried to get me to tell them. I just say, I don't know any. Oldie
